Anime Fans Pick Which 1st Season Outshone the Sequel
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
It's hard to live up to a big hit. Sequels, whether its anime, live-action television, or movies, try to capitalize on the success of their predecessor. Sometimes it's a glowing success (see: John Wick) and sometimes it an abject failure (see: The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). The stakes can be high, especially if a piece of media has an especially passionate fanbase. Anime fans are no exception, as a recent goo! Ranking poll found out. The website asked anime fans which sequels failed to live up to the originals with some surprising results.
The top choice was Mr. Osomatsu. The anime's first season was money-making phenomenon with magazine collaborations selling out. The series' popularity swelled to the point that it was expected to have major growth at dōjin events like Comiket but its popularity began petering out by 2017 despite the then soon to premiere second season.
The poll also includes several other popular series from Haikyu!! to Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan. Do you agree with the results? Are there other series you feel lost momentum or appeal in the sequels? Let us know in the forums.
